The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is probably one of the most inspirational novels ever written, and it’s certainly become one of my favourite books over the years. The story follows an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago, who travels from Spain to Egypt in search of treasure buried deep in the pyramids. On his journey, he meets alchemists, kings, and even Death itself — all of whom teach him important lessons about life and ourselves.
Introduction
The story follows a young shepherd boy named Santiago who is magically shown the whole world and asked what he wants. Santiago states that he wants to discover the Personal Legend, which has been his life’s quest. He pursues this journey with determination and meets several people and learns things that help him on his journey to fulfil his Personal Legend.
Plot Overview
The Alchemist tells the story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets an alchemist, who presents Santiago with what will be his greatest adventure, and teaches him that in order to find treasure one must know how to listen to omens. It’s a winding road filled with meaningful encounters with strangers that can help you on your quest.

Characterization
Paulo Coelho’s novel, the alchemist, is a story of a journey to self-discovery. Santiago is a shepherd boy in Andalusia who dreams of travelling to the pyramids of Egypt. During his journey, he meets various people with whom he shares some form of wisdom or spiritual guidance for which each then searches for their Personal Legend as well as looking at their own lives.
Climax
The protagonist in the story is a shepherd boy named Santiago. While he may be a shepherd, he lives a different type of life; one that requires him to listen to his heart and travel the world in search of personal growth. He was called on by the Giant that every person has inside their chest and was taken on an unexpected journey around the world with powerful encounters with characters from other times and places. Eventually, Santiago learns not to forget about himself as he continued his journey for others.
Conflict and Resolution
The journey for the protagonist Santiago is an allegory of the journey in one’s own life. He sets out to find a treasure from an old king that was said to be hidden somewhere in Egypt and along the way, he learns things about himself, comes across so many obstacles but eventually succeeds with love as his ultimate destination. He also learns lessons such as not following your dreams without actually thinking them through and how people might just want to see you fail because they can’t take their own lives anymore and they want you to do it for them instead. In the end, this book teaches you how to follow your heart.
Other Elements of Fiction
The novel features Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who wants to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. He trades home comforts for the arduous journey ahead – travelling from Spain, through North Africa and finally across the Egyptian desert – before finding his coveted treasure where he least expects it.
The book is said to follow an ancient tradition of allegorical storytelling in which symbolically coded incidents are used to communicate deeply personal meanings.
